Talking with our eighth grade teacher today, and we are poised to jump into the 1:1 experience in our middle school. I am excited about chromebooks and how google might continue to improve the product and experience. Thanks for your thoughts, Martin!

Had a conversation with another podcast group (ER Mobile) and touched everyone of those five points in our discussion of devices. Fact is, many schools will turn to multiple devices. When I think about chromebooks for next year at our school, I think about consumption over innovation and creation. Some schools are doing the BYOD - bring your own device, too, already, which I see as a huge headache. Thanks for posting on this topic. (Lion only? Come on.)

You are correct regarding your point about the lack of access to MS Office applications. However this can be overcome with a third-party solution like Ericom AccessNow, a pure HTML5 RDP client that enables Chromebook users to connect to any RDP host, including Terminal Server (RDS Session Host), physical desktops or VDI virtual desktops – and run their Windows applications and desktops in a browser.

Ericom‘s AccessNow does not require Java, Flash, Silverlight, ActiveX, or any other underlying technology to be installed on end-user devices – an HTML5 browser is all that is required.

Here's an example of a large school district that is using Ericom AccessNow to provide 30,000 students and staff access to Windows applications from Chromebooks, iPads and other devices:
http://www.ericom.com/pr/pr_111206.asp?URL_ID=708

Ericom also offers special pricing for education customers.

For more info, and to download a demo, visit:

Note: I work for Ericom

Great article! very informative and well-written with lots of charming details.

I look forward to your upcoming post about the financing for the laptops. It'd be great to know whether the school gets a special pricing from Google, whether they're renting the laptops or if they're on a payment plan, and how much they pay per laptop.

Bookmarked the page to check in on this blog from time to time. Nice site you have here.
